The Economic Society of Australia (Qld), in association with Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Griffith University, and The University of Queensland invite you to participate in the 2018 Queensland Economics Summer School at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat in the Gold Coast hinterland from 2pm, 7 November to 3pm, 9 November 2018.
Economics of Patents and Innovation – Theory, Data and Policy Applications
Intellectual Property and Patent Policies are important topics in the research on and policy debates about innovation. In this summer school one of the leading researchers in the economics of innovation will discuss the current research on the effectiveness of the patent system, and what patenting can tell us about science and innovation. Jaffe will review the current state of theoretical and empirical research in the field, and discuss applications that quantify the role of public scientific research in commercial innovation, and that use network analytic methods to understand how researchers and inventors interact. The draft agenda for the Summer School is available here - 2018_Summer_School_agenda.pdf
Lead presenter: Professor Adam B. Jaffe
Professor Jaffe is Professor Emeritus and Research Professor in Economics at Brandeis University in Massachusetts and Adjunct Professor at QUT. From May 2013 to December 2017 he was Director and Senior Fellow at Motu, the New Zealand economic and public policy research institute. He is an Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology.
Jaffe is the author of over 100 scholarly articles and two books—Patents, Citations and Innovations: A Window on the Knowledge Economy (with Manuel Trajtenberg, 2002); and Innovation and Its Discontents: How Our Broken Patent System is Endangering Innovation and Progress and What to Do About It (with Josh Lerner, 2004). He is also the editor (with Ben Jones, 2015) of The Changing Frontier: Rethinking Science and Innovation Policy. In 2017, his paper with Richard Newell and Rob Stavins, “The Induced Innovation Hypothesis and Energy-Saving Technological Change” (1999) won the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists Award for Publication of Enduring Quality.
In addition to his scholarly activities, Jaffe is active in public policy formulation and debate. He has served on numerous panels and committees for the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
