Year in review and the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics - Speaker: Jay Sarkar
Date
From: Thursday December 6, 2018, 5:15 pm
To: Thursday December 6, 2018, 7:30 pm
Join us for the Economic Society’s final event for the year and some drinks and savouries.
Dr Jayanta Sarkar (QUT) will provide some comments on 2018 Nobel Prize recipients for their contribution to growth models under uncertainty.
Professor Paul Romer’s endogenous growth model proposed there is a snowball effect in the market of ideas and changed the way economists think about human capital.
Professor William Nordhaus contributed through his applied models IAMS, which seeks to quantify the impact of climate change in the context of macroeconomic policy.
"Policymakers prefer the comfort of hard numbers. But the often-unfathomable complexity of human society and natural processes may mean that other guides are sometimes needed to set policy, from the precautionary principle to moral reasoning. Ironically, Mr Nordhaus' computations, like those of Mr Romer, made that awareness possible.
Above all, both of this year's prize-winners tackled problems that the field both could not understand and could not afford not to understand. They blazed trails that scholars continue to follow- to the benefit of economics and humanity."
- The Economist, 13 October
