DESCRIPTION:Starbucks\, Apple and other global firms are accused of not paying the taxes they are supposed to pay. How can that be? Can we change that? Do we want to change that? This presentation will start by providing some basic principles for designing taxes and\, in particular\, corporate income taxes. With global firms having multiple mechanisms to avoid taxes\, the question remains whether anything can change that. The answer is &lsquo\;yes&rsquo\; and this presentation will focus on the theory behind this answer and how the theory affects policy developments.
These important issues will be explored in a lunchtime seminar by Professor Pascalis Raimondos of QUT. The seminar is targeted at economists and others with interest in this important field as part of a series of professional development seminars organised by the Society. The seminar is free to members of the Society and at moderate cost to nonmembers.
Professor Raimondos has recently joined QUT as Head of School for Economics and Finance after 26 years at Copenhagen Business School\, Denmark. His main research fields are International Trade and Public Finance. He has been a member of the Danish Research Council and of the Danish Competition Authority.
