Young Economists Event – Economic impacts of the GST distribution system on Queensland

Australia’s system of federal financial relations involves the distribution of Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue to the states and territories which provide health, education and other services to their residents.

But what are the economic impacts of the GST distribution system?

What analytical methods can be used by economists to examine this question?

In this technical session, representatives from the Queensland Productivity Commission will draw on their recent advice to the Queensland Government on the economic impacts of the GST distribution system on Queensland.  In doing so they will discuss how econometrics, partial equilibrium analysis and other analytical methods can be applied to provide new insights to a complex, real-world policy question.
