Date: Wednesday Jun 22, 2022, 1:00 pm

This is event is presented jointly by the Economic Society of Australia and the University of Queensland.

The energy transition is changing the nature of the whole value chain of electricity markets. Low- or no-carbon new generation technologies are dominated by fixed costs and have near-zero variable costs, while distributed technologies put more control in the hands of households who are less sophisticated and whose actions are less easily directed by market operators.

How have markets been adjusting to this new reality and what role might they play in the future? Each panellist will present for 10 minutes, followed by time for questions and discussion.

Future ready? Australia and international trade in the post-pandemic global economy

Event Type: ESA Event

Date: Friday May 6, 2022, 12:00 pm

Australia’s trade flows have experienced a high degree of volatility during the global pandemic, due to non-pharmaceutical interventions, supply chain issues and the recent war in Ukraine. As our economy continues to recover, new and emerging trade opportunities are likely to be a key driver of improvements in productivity and living standards. At the same time, these initiatives could face a number of headwinds, as the pace of economic integration has slowed. The multilateral rules-based order has come under pressure and there is a lower appetite for reduced trade barriers among some partners, while others are actively retreating from openness. Navigating such challenges will require a sound evidence base and careful and thorough economic analysis.
